Test after test of U.S. students’ reading and math abilities have shown scores declining since the pandemic.
Now, new results show that it’s not just children whose skills have fallen over the past few years—American adults are getting worse at reading and math, too.
The connection, if any, between the two patterns isn’t clear—the tests aren’t set up to provide that kind of information. But it does point to a populace that is becoming more stratified by ability at a time when economic inequality continues to widen and debates over opportunity for social mobility are on the rise.
The findings from the 2023 administration of the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies, or PIAAC, show that 16- to 65-year-olds’ literacy scores declined by 12 points from 2017 to 2023, while their numeracy scores fell by 7 points during the same period.
These trends aren’t unique in the global context: Of the 31 countries and economies in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that participated in PIAAC, some saw scores drop over the past six years, while others improved or held constant.
Still, as in previous years, the United States doesn’t compare favorably to other countries: The country ranks in the middle of the pack in literacy and below the international average in math. (Literacy and numeracy on the test are scored on a 500-point scale.)
But Americans do stand out in one way: The gap between the highest- and lowest-performing adults is growing wider, as the top scorers hold steady and other test takers see their scores fall.
Tumblr media
“There’s a dwindling middle in the United States in terms of skills,” said Peggy Carr, the commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, which oversees PIAAC in the country. (The test was developed by the OECD and is administered every three years.)
It’s a phenomenon that distinguishes the United States, she said.
“Some of that is because we’re very diverse and it’s large, in comparison to some of the OECD countries,” Carr said in a call with reporters on Monday. “But that clearly is not the only reason.”
Tumblr media
American children, too, are experiencing this widening chasm between high and low performers. National and international tests show the country’s top students holding steady, while students at the bottom of the distribution are falling further behind.
It’s hard to know why U.S. adults’ scores have taken this precipitous dive, Carr said.
About a third of Americans score at lowest levels PIAAC is different from large-scale assessments for students, which measure kids’ academic abilities.
Instead, this test for adults evaluates their abilities to use math and reading in real-world contexts—to navigate public services in their neighborhood, for example, or complete a task at work. The United States sample is nationally representative random sample, drawn from census data.
American respondents averaged a level 2 of 5 in both subjects.
In practice, that means that they can, for example, use a website to find information about how to order a recycling cart, or read and understand a list of rules for sending their child to preschool. But they would have trouble using a library search engine to find the author of a book.
In math, they could compare a table and a graph of the same information to check for errors. But they wouldn’t be able to calculate average monthly expenses with several months of data.
While the U.S. average is a level 2, more adults now fall at a level 1 or below—28 percent scored at that level in literacy, up from 19 percent in 2017, and 34 percent in numeracy, up from 29 percent in 2017.
Respondents scoring below level 1 couldn’t compare calendar dates printed on grocery tags to determine which food item was packed first. They would also struggle to read several job descriptions and identify which company was looking to hire a night-shift worker.
The findings also show sharp divides by race and national origin, with respondents born in the United States outscoring those born outside of the country, and white respondents outscoring Black and Hispanic test takers. Those trends have persisted over the past decade.

"Seven federal agencies are partnering to implement President Biden’s American Climate Corps, announcing this week they would work together to recruit 20,000 young Americans and fulfill the administration's vision for the new program.
The goals spelled out in the memorandum of understanding include comprehensively tackling climate change, creating partnerships throughout various levels of government and the private sector, building a diverse corps and serving all American communities.
The agencies—which included the departments of Commerce, Interior, Agriculture, Labor and Energy, as well the Environmental Protection Agency and AmeriCorps—also vowed to ensure a “range of compensation and benefits” that open the positions up to a wider array of individuals and to create pathways to “high-quality employment.”
Leaders from each of the seven agencies will form an executive committee for the Climate Corps, which Biden established in September, that will coordinate efforts with an accompanying working group. They will create the standards for ACC programs, set compensation guidelines and minimum terms of service, develop recruitment strategies, launch a centralized website and establish performance goals and objectives. The ACC groups will, beginning in January, hold listening sessions with potential applicants, labor unions, state and local governments, educational institutions and other stakeholders.
The working group will also review all federal statutes and hiring authorities to remove any barriers to onboarding for the corps and standardize the practices across all participating agencies. Benefits for corps members will include housing, transportation, health care, child care, educational credit, scholarships and student loan forgiveness, stipends and non-financial services.
As part of the goal of the ACC, agencies will develop the corps so they can transition to “high-quality, family-sustaining careers with mobility potential” in the federal or other sectors. AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith said the initiative would prepare young people for “good-paying union jobs.”
Within three weeks of rolling out the ACC, EPA said more than 40,000 people—mostly in the 18-35 age range—expressed interest in joining the corps. The administration set an ambitious goal for getting the program underway, aiming to establish the corps’ first cohort in the summer of 2024.
The corps members will work in roles related to ecosystem restoration and conservation, reforestation, waterway protection, recycling, energy conservation, clean energy deployment, disaster preparedness and recovery, fire resilience, resilient recreation infrastructure, research and outreach. The administration will look to ensure 40% of the climate-related investments flow to disadvantaged communities as part of its Justice40 initiative.
EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the MOU would allow the ACC to “work across the federal family” to push public projects focused on environmental justice and clean energy.
“The Climate Corps represents a significant step forward in engaging and nurturing young leaders who are passionate about climate action, furthering our journey towards a sustainable and equitable future,” Regan said.
The ACC’s executive committee will hold its first meeting within the next 30 days. It will draw support from a new climate hub within AmeriCorps, as well as any staffing the agency heads designate."

Celebrating 60 Years of the XB-70 Valkyrie Mach 3 Super Bomber
September 16, 2024 Military Aviation
XB-70 60th anniversary
The lone XB-70 Valkyrie is photographed as it is moved to a new building at the Museum of the United States Air Force located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, on Oct. 27, 2015. Beginning in the late 1950s and continuing through the mid-1960s, tests were conducted at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex, in support of the XB-70 program. The now-retired aircraft made its first flight on Sept. 21, 1964. (U.S. Air Force photo by Will Haas)
The experimental legacy of the iconic XB-70 Valkyrie, which made its first flight on Sept. 21, 1964.
An article published on the U.S. Air Force website commemorates the 60th anniversary of the first flight of the legendary XB-70 Valkyrie, a supersonic bomber that captured the imagination of aviation enthusiasts and engineers alike. Known for its sleek and futuristic design, the XB-70 remains a symbol of the experimental and ambitious spirit of Cold War-era aircraft development. Despite only two prototypes ever being built, the aircraft has left an indelible mark on military aviation history.
The XB-70 Valkyrie was originally conceived in the 1950s as a high-speed, high-altitude bomber for the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command. At a time when technological advancements were rapidly accelerating, the U.S. Air Force sought a bomber capable of flying faster and higher than the B-52 Stratofortress, its workhorse of the era (as well as the backbone of the strategic bomber fleet today and for some more decades in the future…).
With a planned cruise speed of Mach 3 and an operating altitude of 70,000 feet, the XB-70 promised to outpace and outmaneuver Soviet defenses, which were a growing concern during the Cold War.
One of the most remarkable features of the XB-70 was its ability to “ride” its own shockwave, a design innovation that allowed it to maintain stability and performance at supersonic speeds. The Valkyrie’s iconic delta wing, combined with six powerful jet engines, gave it an exotic and striking appearance, making it one of the most visually distinctive aircraft ever built. Its outer wing panels were hinged, allowing them to be lowered during flight to optimize the aerodynamic performance at high speeds.

The article highlights the crucial role played by Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) in the development of the XB-70.
The testing of the Valkyrie’s engines, aerodynamics, and other key components began at Arnold Air Force Base in the late 1950s, well before the first prototype took shape. The AEDC’s facilities were instrumental in pushing the boundaries of what was possible in aviation at the time. One of the earliest tests involved the air-breathing engine nozzles proposed for the XB-70 in March 1958. This was followed by extensive wind tunnel testing of scale models of the Valkyrie, where the aerodynamic characteristics of bombs dropped from the aircraft were also studied.
Tumblr media
A technician makes adjustments to a scale model of the XB-70 Valkyrie before aerodynamic characteristics related to the aircraft are evaluated in Tunnel A of the von Kármán Gas Dynamics Facility at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex, in 1959. Beginning in the late 1950s and continuing through the mid-1960s, tests were conducted at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex, in support of the XB-70 program. Only two Valkyries were built, with only one of the pair remaining. The now-retired aircraft made its first flight on Sept. 21, 1964. (U.S. Air Force photo)
Development continued into the early 1960s, with the YJ93 turbojet engines, designed specifically for the XB-70, undergoing rigorous testing at AEDC. These engines were critical to the Valkyrie’s ability to reach and maintain supersonic speeds. However, in 1961, before the first prototype was even completed, the bomber program was canceled due to budget constraints and concerns over the bomber’s vulnerability to Soviet surface-to-air missiles, which had rapidly advanced in capability.
Although the XB-70 bomber program was terminated, the Valkyrie found new life as a research aircraft.

The U.S. Air Force recognized the potential of the aircraft to serve in aerodynamics and propulsion research, particularly in the study of large supersonic aircraft. Consequently, two XB-70 prototypes were completed, and testing continued, including at AEDC, where a scale version of the XB-70 inlet, paired with a full-scale YJ93 engine, was tested in August 1962.
XB-70A number 1 (62-001) made its first flight from Palmdale to Edwards Air Force Base, CA, on Sept. 21, 1964. The second XB-70A (62-207) made its first flight on Jul. 17, 1965. The latter differed from the first prototype for being built with an added 5 degrees of dihedral on the wings as suggested by the NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA, wind-tunnel studies.

While the 62-001 made only one flight above Mach 3, because of poor directional stability experienced past Mach 2.5, the second XB-70, achieved Mach 3 for the first time on Jan. 3, 1966 and successfully completed a total of nine Mach 3 flights by June on the same year.
However, the Valkyrie program suffered a devastating setback in June 1966 when the second prototype was destroyed in a midair collision with an F-104N Starfighter during a photoshoot. This tragic accident resulted in the loss of key personnel and diminished the future prospects of the Valkyrie.
Tumblr media

Despite this setback, the remaining XB-70 continued to serve as a valuable research platform. In 1967, the U.S. Air Force transferred the aircraft to NASA, where it was used in support of the National Supersonic Transport (SST) program. NASA employed the XB-70 to investigate supersonic flight operations, but the SST program was eventually canceled in 1971, marking the end of America’s efforts to develop a commercial supersonic airliner.
The XB-70 Valkyrie’s final flight took place on Feb. 4, 1969, when it was flown to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. There, the aircraft was placed on display at what is now the National Museum of the United States Air Force, where it remains a testament to the audacious engineering and design of its era.
Tumblr media

Though only two XB-70s were ever built, their legacy endures: the aircraft’s pioneering advancements in aerodynamics, engine performance, and high-speed flight helped shape the future of supersonic aviation.
Tumblr media
Pilots who were to perform the first test flights for the XB-70 Valkyrie operate the YJ93 engine, the powerplant of the XB-70, while the engine is tested under simulated flight conditions in May 1964 in the Rocket Test Facility at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex. This was done to help the pilots familiarize themselves with the performance characteristics of the engine prior to the first XB-70 flight, which occurred on Sept. 21, 1964. Beginning in the late 1950s and continuing through the mid-1960s, tests were conducted at Arnold AFB in support of the XB-70 program. Only two Valkyries were built, with only one of the pair remaining. (U.S. Air Force photo)
The first prototype made a total of 83 flights, amassing 160 hours and 16 minutes of flight time, while the second prototype completed 46 flights, totaling 92 hours and 22 minutes.
The XB-70 Valkyrie, with its daring design and groundbreaking capabilities, continues to captivate aviation enthusiasts and engineers. Its story, though short-lived in terms of operational use, highlights the relentless pursuit of innovation that defines the U.S. Air Force and its engineering partners. Sixty years after its first flight, the Valkyrie remains an iconic symbol of the bold ambitions of Cold War-era aviation.

Exceptional X-Men #4 REVIEW
I've been singing the praises of Eve L Ewing and Carmen Carnero's Exceptional X-Men, so let's see what they manage to do now that the premise is established and they've got 5 main characters we're invested in. A benefit of establishing your characters early is that you get to focus on introducing plot elements, special guests, and complications - like serialised storytelling does. Uncanny is a good example of how a lack of focus early on weakens everything you try to do. It's hard to care about The Outliers or Nightcrawler when they feel like wallpaper, and now they're running around an event without knowing who they are. The stakes lay primarily with Rogue. Trista/Bronze is a fantastic example of this done right, and as you'll see we can explore plot developments that wouldn't make sense elsewhere. Spoilers ahoy, caveat emptor.
Tumblr media
Trista gets a lot of focus which works because we know who she is and what she wants.
Due to Kate pushing back against taking these kids somewhere isolated for training, we get to see them try to live normal lives. Trista has friends outside the tiny mutant peer group, a crush, and an interest in theatre. She declared last issue that her goal is to not hurt anyone, and she's struggling with what people tell her to be and what she wants. She's a sweet kid, and I'd say there's a racial component to this dichotomy - how black kids are perceived and how they need to act to get by in a white supremacist world. That's outside my experience but I'm invested in how Trista deals navigates the issue. After all, being strong, kind, gentle and lovely aren't mutually exclusive
I hesitate to compare to Uncanny again, but they both have high school scenes and the difference is stark. Westinghouse College Prep is a real life school in Chicago (that Biggie, Jay Z, Busta Rhymes and DMX all went to) and it is ranked pretty highly nationally. According to its website it has 98% minority enrollment. Importantly, it feels like a real school in 2024 with real people attending it, and not just because it actually is one IRL. There's no need to reach for played out generic high school tropes when the characters feel like real people with real problems already - verisimilitude.
Tumblr media
After a smash cut to Trista with a sentinel looming over her, we learn that Emma does a pretty damn good Danger Room analogue. Trista seems determined and in control at first, using her different powers in concert effectively. She does manage to Empire Strikes Back trip the Sentinel up, but wigs out when it falls on top of her, understandably. Emma calls it, and we see more proof of why she's considered good at training young mutants.
Tumblr media
Bobby's entrance at the end of last issue felt like a cliffhanger by virtue of being on the final page, but I'm glad his presence doesn't derail the plot entirely. It's implied that some time has passed, maybe a week - enough time for Bobby and Trista to get to know each other and enough time for Bobby to feel Kitty is avoiding him. Trista picks up on his odd behaviour and asks Emma about psychic ethics, heh. Her answer is funny and sardonic while still getting the point across. Emma and Trista having one on one time tells us a lot about Emma's sincerity and the trust she's earned through good works.
The subtext of Trista's distraction is made text - she's preoccupied with the audition, her crush, and the fear of exposure/social rejection. While we know this already, or could guess, it's effective to have newer characters tell their story. What they say is as important as what they don't say or how they say it. She responds well to being listened to and positive reinforcement, accepting the reframing of the audition as an opportunity.
Tumblr media
Bobby is definitely up to something and acting weird. His persona feels performative. He's explicitly faking bathroom usage to text privately, and while his texting is worded vaguely enough to not give much away, it does seem sinister. At minimum he is lying about why he's there. Kitty picks up on the same weirdness Trista did and she's really not having it. He doesn't have the vibes of a friend seeking or offering support, though Kitty isn't interested in either and tells him to leave. Idk if Bobby even has a home right now - he was living in Antarctica because ORCHIS poisoned him and he couldn't hold a solid form for long. He was back with Romeo last time we saw him but also didn't have a physical body. I can't blame the creators for not explaining that, I have to assume they're under the same editorial direction everyone else is.
Trista's warmup scene has excellent layout, with the other kids' faces in circles next to their supportive texts. It's a clever way of showing their faces in an issue they're mostly absent from, and it's a solid method of variety in an issue with more texting than most. Showtime!
Tumblr media
Trista meekly introduces herself to the casting guy/director and he suggests that the lead might not be right for her. He's polite, though she's about to disagree when her mutant life and school life clash in an unexpected way. One of those yellow beasts from X-Force appears from a portal and grabs her crush. You don't need to have been reading X-Force, it's a big monster (that were confirmed to be appearing globally in that book) and it's here. Trista rallies and uses her training to bronze up and get her head in the game.
Tumblr media
It's a dangerous situation but has a simple solution suited to Trista's skillset. She grabs it with her tentacle things, ties it up and yeets it through the portal. Her overcoming it with pure force or martial skill would be a bit silly, but by linking her training and the progress she's made with Emma to a simple solution, it feels like an appropriate and believable triumph. Strong yet gentle. Neutralizing the beast and protecting herself and others without using overwhelming violence. It's a very effective character beat and the support/adulation from the theatre people is earned. She nailed the audition, and gets offered her choice of parts, though interestingly she turns it down in favour of her training. The theatre folks show solidarity and swear to keep her mutanthood a secret.
Tumblr media
Trista shows up to training and seems more confident, her posture showing strength and positivity. It looks like Bronze, Axo and Melee are all benefiting and even Kate manages a smile. Then she overhears Bobby on the phone while grabbing some equipment. It's not a good look.
Tumblr media
What Bobby is saying is so weird that she's not even sure it's him. Kate phases her hand next to his heart and straight up threatens him. He explains that everyone is worried about her and she says she's choosing this life. He tries to bring up ORCHIS and she shuts it down, saying out loud that she killed people. A little too loud, it turns out.
Tumblr media
The kids overhear and are horrified, understandably. They're really young and don't have the kind of life experiences that come with being an X-Man - of course they are! Tom Brevoort has made a lot of noise about the X-Men killing people in Fall of X, an argument that has ignored the nuance of being at war with genocidal fascists. The issue hasn't made it to the page in a meaningful way until now, and I couldn't be more impressed. Rooting the issue in Kate's trauma and shame - as something that terrifies the students she's trying to help and likely damaging the trust she's built - approaches it on a believable character level.
This is a big part of what caused Kate to hang up her Spandex and it's something she's going to have to reckon with. Add the kids' emotional and ethical reaction and you've got a fantastic cliffhanger with the promise of explosive drama.
Tumblr media
Kate grabs Bobby's phone and it's Rogue on the other end. She doesn't look like she's at Haven or in uniform, so who knows what's going on there? They're clearly ahead of Raid on Graymalkin as Iceman is in league with them, as if that book needs more characters. Kate doesn't care and hangs up on her. I wasn't going to compare to Uncanny a third time, but if the two are crossing over it invites comparison. Kurt's glib comment about thinking he was a murderer felt trite and silly, next to the dramatic execution of Shadowkat's actions being confronted it looks downright amateur. Kate is clearly having a PTSD flashback or intrusive thought during this conversation - whereas it wouldn't work for Bobby or Emma to announce that she has PTSD, for example.
I do enough shitting on Uncanny's writing in my reviews of that book, my point is how well similar beats are executed in this book. Eve L Ewing and Carmen Carnero's Exceptional X-Men is aptly named and frankly, if you're not reading it you're missing out. We know all these characters well enough that we care about their reaction to this revelation. Kate looks like she's about to break down, and Bronze and Axo's body language is heartbreaking. Emma knows shit is about to hit the fan and she's surely aware she killed people in Fall of X too. That's how you do a cliffhanger. Issue #4 managed to do a Trista focus issue, some slice of life, excellent character work, and lit a fuse to explode next issue all in 20 pages.
Exceptional X-Men is fantastic and you should be reading it.

reading that Tarantulas and Prowl processor overload ask has revived one of my recently dormant fetishes
(this is an expansion on the forced porn download ask actually, wasn't really done b4 sending)
Prowl's archives just being a massive database of miscellaneous data, which seems like a fully practical thing that he'd do for simulation work at first glance, but in truth, he just never deletes anything because he gets off to the feeling of being just sooooo full in places no physical sensation can reach.
He wasn't always like this, you see. Prowl used to maintain good software management habits. He'd defrag according to a strict schedule, used connection buffers often and cleared his processing queues before recharge. He would never think twice about netdiving into shady websites with nasty popups, let alone download anything from there. But eventually, as his processors develop at that exponential pace his handlers noticed upon bringing him online, Prowl got bolder.
Bold enough to make a slip up and plug into a corrupt mainframe, triggering that forced download and kickstarting his fetish for good. He barely remembers anything about that incident other than an overwhelming mental barrage of arousal. Sometimes Prowl wonders if his colleagues at the time knew just what was literally going through his head as he slumped over on the console, seizing in place as they frantically tried to disconnect him safely. Maybe they caught the scent of his overload under his panels, and chose not to say anything.
Prowl would of course say that he was perfectly fine after that incident, but he'd be haunted by that instance of utter bliss he'd felt when like 30 terrabytes of ERP chatlogs and erotic flashgames burned through his neural circuitry. Eventually, he'd start by visiting a library. Full of clean and safe data to indulge in. Then he started logging all non-confidential precinct data, like routine security footage that's get deleted anyways, and dispatch call recordings. Then he started downloading from legal websites, then onto not so legal ones.
He even has backup and extra hard drives stored in his office and habisuite in plain sight, since no one else but other archivists and data specialists would catch on to his kink in the first place. Every once in a while, he'd plug himself into all these units and just let all that data flood through him, his fans and cooling systems squealing in effort to keep up with the deluge of information forcing it's way through his staticy brain, reducing his overclocked cognitive units into jello as his RAM gets consumed by pure uncontrollable math.
He loves the feel of his mind being pounded by googols of nonsense, it makes him hornier than anything else. He'd save anything from the internet, books and numeric databases are his usual go tos; high definition media are a must, the more graphically and audially intensive the better; the most unoptimized and performance heavy video games, anything that would fill up his hungry battle computer until it's full to bursting and melting.
Sometimes when he feels extra naughty, he'd even fire up the various malware and viruses the Spec Ops team would bring back, on top of all the seedy ones he'd find online. He'd trigger them in his processor and lie back in his berth, finger his fluttering pussy and feel the malicious software start tearing through his brain as his battle computer instinctively fights back, making him feel soooo hot all over. And every time he overloads, it sweeps all of his progress, and the self cleaning protocols will just have to restart as he writhes helplessly in the dark of his room.
Software sanctity? Fuck that, he'd hit anything as long as it demolishes his brain and make him into a silly, messy, spasming horny mess. A real dataslut.
god this is so good. He's quite literally overloading his processor out. It's almost like an addiction. Of course, Prowl could stop any time he wants... he could, he just doesn't want to! After a while, pumping his head full of junk data and malicious viruses is the only way Prowl can even have a fulfilling orgasm. Being full of miscellaneous data is just not enough. It's a pleasant pressure in his constantly calculating brain, yes, but if he wants to cum, he needs something stronger. He'll keep frying his brain inside of his helm as long as he gets to feel that electrifying thrill of his battle computer struggling to deflect the attacks on his mainframe.
It feels like he's falling apart at the circuits, delicate wiring so hot that it's disintegrating into dust, and all he can do is frantically rub his soaking wet valve through it all, optics bright and staring off into space as his HUD floods with nonsense. All his senses are completely taken over by the foreign malware, all he knows is that he feels so good.
Honestly, I wonder what would happen if he got stuck like that. Just for a day or two. And someone had to find him in his apartment, face twisted in pure bliss as his frame keeps twitching even after countless hours of continuous overloads. Of course, Prowl's processor gets cleaned out after that, yet he can't help but want to repeat it... to feel so absolutely stuffed and overwhelmed with data that he's just a wet, helpless thing. To give up control and let his processor sink into endless pleasure.
But for now, he's got a morning shift at the precinct to finish.

neopets posted a very lengthy update to the portal site, the new format replacing the monthly AMAs.
the full post can be found here: https://portal.neopets.com/news/may22-neopets-updates
but i'll summarize the community questions and other updates beneath the cut:
community QnA:
Q: is neopets planning a "rugpull"?
A: no, the team working on the site has doubled over the past two years and everyone is working hard to revive not just the brand but the site itself. these teams' commitment to both neopets, com and spinoff projects and merchandise for brand relevance is described as "unwavering"
Q: why are they making money with nc releases but not improving the site?
A: there are different teams working on engineering, improvements, and nc releases simultaneously. the engineering and improvement team is much larger than the team working on nc, it's just less visible to players than new items because it's "wizard behind the curtain" changes (they described it as fixing issues on an older tech stack). every dollar they make goes back into neopets in some form, including events, collaborations, and further development. the company is still at a loss but it's not as dire as it used to be two years ago (which is a great improvement, NC discourse aside).
as for major updates:
revamped NC mall - the nc mall will get a new converted layout around late Q2 to Q3 this year, and a tutorial along with the changes.
easier to find on-site wishlist
one click purchasing (alongside the cart)
fixed pet preview!!
reorganized shop directory
new shopkeeper NPCs
here's the new mockup:
Tumblr media
website loading speed improvements - there's been a 35% improvement in loading speed since january as a result of specific optimizations, such as backend enhancements, optimizing database queries, cleaning up records, and upgrading servers (a bunch of tech talk essentially)
anti botting progress - neopets has seen a 15% reduction in bot traffic by blocking it at the network level (which likely improved the performance of the site in and of itself). they intend to further tighten defenses, through methods that remain unstated but will likely hit these paid bots and the people who benefit from them hard.
wearable NP and NC item bug fixes - 37 items have been fixed since april, with 21 items on the chopping block for later this month.
and what's on the horizon:
altador cup: they grey year
enhancements to jhudora and illusen's quests, including new battledome item returns (and a $7 club perk that grants extra time)
more progress on converting NP and NC items
expansion of the avatar high score table
adding invisible pets to the customization spotlight
updates to the trading post, including a page conversion
and of course, the void within: episode 2
i'm glad that this new format allows for more transparency, a lot of people thought the video/stream format was too "corporate" and so these big updates to the portal allows them to cover a lot more. i'm excited for what's to come, and i'm honestly glad they ripped the bandaid off and just outright said "yeah we're working on the site behind the scenes y'all just don't see that part cause it's nerd shit".
a lot has improved over the last two years in this site, and i'm appreciative of the team's hard work regardless of my numerous complaints about things like neocash items and the $7 club. they clearly care about feedback and making neopets for the players before all else including any kind of profit.

i wanted to know how to get into perfumes, and more specifically (at least to begin with) how to distinguish notes, so that i can know what kind of scents i like
im embarrassed to go to high end stores and try perfumes without buying tho, and at the average commercial perfume store the place smells so strongly itself that i can't really appreciate the smell of the perfume. also a lot of the products they have are very sweet, which i don't like
anyway, any tips?
Hi Love!! Thank you for your patience 🌹
I'm so happy you're interested in getting into perfume, it's such a fun hobby! But I also know what you mean, it can feel a little overwhelming at first. In this, I tried my best to focus on the two parts [1] How to get started with distinguishing notes (& figure out what you like) and [2] How to test perfumes in store. These are tips based on what I did (and do), so there are no doubt other (maybe better?) ways, but this was my starting point ✨
[1] How to get started with distinguishing notes (& figure out what you like)
First, knowing the basics will make this journey a lot easier. A scent usually has top, heart and base notes that develop while wearing, scents are traditionally grouped into scent groups (fresh, fruity, woody, etc). [I’m keeping this super short here bc this is already rather long, but I can give a more detailed explanation/introduction if you’d like! ♥️]
Before you go into the store, where the selection and atmosphere might be overwhelming, I suggest doing some research at home. That way, you can go into the store with an idea of what you want to try. The tools that I can really recommend are fragrance database websites. My go tos are fragrantica and parfumo. On those websites, you can look up any perfume and you will find a breakdown of their notes. There are also categories that users vote on, such as season this fragrance is best worn in, gender or occasion it’s suited for, price, performance etc. You can also search by notes. Now what I did when I first got into fragrances:
If you already have a few scents you like, you can check those scents on a database and see what scent profiles they have. I didn’t do this by note, but by “main accords” — as in, what overall impression this scent gives (sweet, fresh, white flowers, woody, animalic, musky, powdery…). So I listed all perfumes I could think of that I liked (having smelled them before, gifts etc) and went through them one by one. I.e. Dior Addict is described as sweet, white flowers, etc, and the notes are jasmine, orange blossom, vanilla, etc. I listed the descriptions, then went to the next, checked if the descriptive adjectives were on my list, added another mark for those or added the new descriptions. It was a lengthy but fun process and in the end, I had a list that showed me that I liked fragrances that were in the white flowers category (for example). As you can see, I didn’t go into the notes themselves (orange blossom, jasmine, vanilla), BUT you could do that, too, for a more detailed understanding of what notes you already enjoy smelling. This process will give you an idea of what you already like, and then you can already get a vague idea whether a scent you’ve heard of or seen online might be something you enjoy, without even having smelled it.
Additionally, once you know this, you can pay attention to those notes in scents. As in, you now know you like scents that have mango (for example). Smelling the scents you own, you might now be able to detect that yes, they all have a mango note in common (or maybe you don’t know what orange blossoms smell like, but now you notice they all have something in common — that might very well be orange blossom!). This is a possible first step to “training” your nose. Perfumers (and hardcore enthusiasts) have scent libraries (boxes with little bottles, expensive) that have the pure scents, as in, pure musk, orange blossom, sandalwood, etc. I haven’t looked into getting one of these libraries (yet?), which of course would give you an exact answer as to what each note smells like. My amateur approach was basically rooted in trying to understand what I liked based on fragrances alone. It worked for me, however: I had a fragrance that I was completely in love with, for example, but I couldn’t have told you what it smelled like apart from “pure heaven”. I smelled it again years later and could detect that it has jasmine and orange blossoms, two notes I love. In this process, it also helps to now and then try scents that pride themselves as smelling like specific things. The names usually give it away: Jasmine et Cigarette, Tubereuse Noire, Bare Vanilla, etc.
If you don’t have scents you already know you like, I would suggest finding lists of scents that are grouped together. You could either check the “mango” note on fragrantica (to continue w this example), or you could look up “mango perfumes” on Pinterest, where you will find collages, lists etc as well. (Just be careful when it comes to subjective lists like “sexiest scents” — that can be inspirational, of course, but those aren’t notes or scent families). That way, you have a few scents in mind with a note (or scent accord) you’re interested in, and you’re ready for testing! (Both to see whether you like the scents, and to see whether you can pick out the notes you’re interested in)
This process is meant to help you find which notes you like, and maybe how to detect a first handful of notes in a scent. You also might have a list of scents you want to try, now.
[2.1]Trying scents in store — a few general tips
I know perfume stores especially can feel intimidating. But I promise, most shop assistants are genuinely nice. And with perfume especially you have to keep in mind that testing and re-testing is expected. Most people don't buy a perfume at first sniff (or shouldn't, at least). Going to a store to test fragrances is like going to a store to try on clothes. It's part of the process, you have every right to do that. So don't feel bad for wandering into a store to sniff two fragrances and then leave.
If the store is busy, you will most likely be left alone. If someone flutters by and asks if they can help you, you can usually fall back on “Not at the moments, thank you” (<- maybe you might want to strike up a conversation later? “Actually, I’m looking for a perfume that smells like clean laundry—“) and, ALWAYS: you’re looking for a gift for someone else. That way, they won’t be tempted to try and convince YOU the scent is perfect, because they don’t know the person it’s for (this works with anything btw, jewellery, bags…).
If the store is too boujee and the people working there are genuinely rude — fuck them. Not worth your time. You have every right to enjoy fragrances, they are not an authority on who gets to enjoy what based on the fact that they work in a store. Hello?! The nerve of some people. Don't let that get you down, it's them, not you.
If you’re uncomfortable going alone, you will most likely be left alone if you have a friend with you — and it might make you feel more comfortable.
[2.2]How to try a fragrance
Locate the tester strips, select one, and spray it once or twice. Shake the strip like you would flap a fan so the scent can settle (and you don’t get your nose wet when sniffing the paper). You can either sniff the strip of fan the tester in front of your nose so the scent wafts over. If there are no tester strips available or you’re in a hurry, you can also try sniffing the bottle cap (if available) — the scent has settled there and you’ll immediately get the full scent profile without waiting for it to settle and develop.
You want to try something but the store is overwhelmed with scent? Spray a tester strip and take it outside. You can spray multiple, too, and mark them (I usually rip off the end of one, fold the other, keep one as it was) — just be careful that you’re not folding them all up together in your pocket while they’re still wet, the scents might mingle too much.
Your nose will get overwhelmed if you try too many scents, even with the coffee beans they keep around, so really, you could walk in, locate three scents you’ve been meaning to try (or maybe you see a bottle that looks funky and you'd like to smell that one, too), and leave the store within 10 minutes. You don't have to spend ages in the store, is what I'm trying to say.
Outside, you can take a whiff from the papers.
[2.2]A last little add-on: Buying a fragrance
Always test a fragrance on skin before buying. It smells different than on paper. Also I advise you to always test a scent multiple times, on different days. A good salesperson will actually advise you to do that, too. “Walk around, come back later or another day” <- if they don’t suggest that, you can say it yourself. “Thank you for your help, I’ll see how it develops on skin :)”
This got very long and it still feels like there is so much left to say. I really hope it helped at least a little and somewhat answered your questions!! Please let me know if there is anything else, I'd love to help!! And I've been thinking - maybe a guide would be really helpful. The differences between fragrantica and parfumo for example, or what scent families there are, stuff like that was besides the point here but still important. I'm rambling, but this was over 1k of words and I was unsure whether it was enough haha 🌹 Either way, again: I hope it helped!!! Kiss kiss!!!!!!

On Birdo's Gender
Heads up this post will quote manuals and website descriptions and by no means supports the messed up language in it. It was wrong then and it is wrong now, this post is purely for educational purposes. Also, this is meant to be a useful tool to use against people who try to use this Pink Dinosaur to be losers all while clearing up any actual confusion.
So... appearing first in Super Mario Bros. 2 USA, Birdo first gets the following description in the manual. "He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He'd rather be called 'Birdetta.'" But it is a bit different in the Japanese version than in the localization. "Katherine, thinks they are a girl and spits eggs from their mouth. Calling them Kathy puts them in a good mood." So while the Japanese manual isn't as bad it is still not great. The reason for this Japan isn't the kindest to trans people. Many people themselves in Japan will use pejoratives to refer trans people, mislabel them, make "jokes" at their expense, and yes misgender them. Look no further than that one Metroid developer interview where a developer called Samus Aran a newhalf as a "joke." This information provides some context on why Birdo is treated the way she is not just in the West but in Japan itself. Btw as a side note on this idea of "jokes' this also might be the reason the Mario series uses Luigi wearing Peach's dress as a joke so often. To the point they made this description for Luigi which can be interpreted as implying some things about Luigi. "When Toadette finds one of these, she can transform into the super-powered Peachette. (Sorry Luigi-only Toadette can use this item!)" Note, the Luigi thing is a maybe and not guaranteed, this is just speculation. That aside, let's move on.
Shows up in a Japanese commercial where she has a deeper voice, which is points to the obvious fact that she is intended to be trans. Side note, trans women can have both deep and high pitched voices, and thus this depiction of Birdo can go either way here.
Next up is a description of from the Double Dash Japanese Website. 「ヨッシーの彼女に見えて実は彼氏!?」 "Birdo appears to be Yoshi's girlfriend, but is actually his boyfriend!?" This is some more of that yikes moments when it comes to Birdo and how they are treated.
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Popple appears to almost misgender Birdo but ends up not doing so. This seems to be a decent depiction of her. Now some people believe she is being deadnamed, here, however Birdie seems to be just a pet name she likes being called.
So at this point people on this topic typically bring but the next thing and call it a day, but I have more here to bring up. So some people bring up Birdo's Brawl description, but it is irrelevant to this topic because Smash Bros. is not canon.
Next up Birdo's BS Super Mario USA depiction. As mentioned in a previous post, Birdo has sisters. This also makes some decent treatment of her and her sisters. In addition the Super Birdos are voiced by Jun Donna, Rika and Akemi which are all trans women if I am correct. If I made a mistake at all here let me know. In addition they all have deep voices. See the video BSスーパーマリオUSA パワーチャレンジ 第1回 from the channel kukun kun.
Now Birdo in Paper Mario: Sticker Star Birdo sings a song. “Heart of a woman, heart of a man… Both can know of love's grace…” This one is a bit iffy, it might be intended to be something intended to be used to mistreat Birdo, or it might not be and is just meant to refer to her being trans. Side note, in Paper Mario: Color Splash Birdo sings a song that references Doki Doki Panic and her relationship with Yoshi. In addition her being a performer in this game is a follow-up to what she said she would do in Superstar Saga.
Next up is Birdo's descriptions in various games. Games like Super Mario RPG, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Tennis, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Mario Party 9 all use the correct pronouns for Birdo. Now I've heard it claimed Super Mario Party does the same but I don't have access to it, and it is also claimed in the UK version it misgenders her. It also has been claimed that in the Japanese versions she is also misgendered but again I don't have access to those to check them. But even if the Japanese did say that, it would be better to abide by the US localization's usage of Birdo's pronoun since she is intended to be a trans woman.
Finally in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Birdo is featured on the sponsor Women Of Racing Organization thus acknowledged her as what she is. In addition the Sunshine Airport Intercom refers to her by the correct pronouns as well. Source: Sunshine Airport Intercom Voices in 4 different voice overs! [MARIO KART 8 DELUXE]
Now on Birdo spitting out eggs alongside the rest of her species doing the same. It is never stated anywhere whether or not the Birdos have sexes, and they obviously don't have any spectrum sexual dimorphism as most Mario characters don't So it is probably safe to say Birdos either are sexless, or if they do have a sex then like Yoshies all Birdos can make eggs.
